Solar Powered Attic Fan

The Solar Guys - Wednesday, November 13, 2013

A solar powered attic fan is a great way to save on your electric bills and keep a more stabilized indoor environment. A Solar Star attic fan can improve any attic situation with minimal installation time. It is a great way to save money on your electric bills, keep your house cooler during summer months and help eliminate environmental pollution. The Solar Guys are your one stop solution to solar attic fans, window coatings and daylighting systems.

Florida’s summer gets up to 90 degree temperatures and thick humidity. This heat and moisture get trapped in the attic when it radiates through the roof. It then transfers to our living space, requiring us to bump up the thermostat while sending our electric bills soaring. The high humidity levels in the attic migrate through the ceiling where it becomes trapped and saturates the insulation, promotes fungal decay and causes plywood delamination. A solar powered attic fan helps to eliminate this problem and the best part is that it is powered by the sun, so there is no additional electricity used.

We are a family owned business in the greater Central Florida area since 2001. Initially we created the business to meet the demands for natural daylighting products, but have expanded into other renewable energy items such as a Solar Star solar powered attic fan and Huper Optik window films. We cater to over twelve counties in the Central Florida region including Lake, Orange, Pasco and Alachua counties.

Solar Star is the leader in solar powered attic ventilation solutions. They offer the most technologically advanced, environmentally friendly solutions available. Solar Star Attic Fan

The Solar Guys - Wednesday, November 13, 2013

A Solar Star attic fan is a great way to make your home more comfortable by removing the hot air in your attic. Living in Florida means lots of sunshine and fun, but it also means lots of heat and humidity. As we escape into the comfort of our air-conditioned spaces, we do not think about the spaces that are not air-conditioned or properly insulated. Attics tend to trap solar heat that enters the roof and has nowhere to go. That heat transfers into our living spaces and we bump up our thermostats to compensate, which increases our utility bills.

A Solar Star attic fan helps to keep your attic cooler in the summer by reducing extreme heat buildup in your home. It also helps to reduce damaging moisture in the winter and prolong the life of your roof. It is durable with a non-corrosive polymeric integral exhaust screen and compatible with all roof types. It is also an eco-friendly product with a solar-powered design so you harness the power of the sun to cool your attic space without the use of electricity.

A Solar Star attic fan is the ideal ventilation solution. Solar Star is the leader in solar powered attic fans. They bring you the most technologically-advanced, environmentally-friendly ventilation solution. By placing the attic fan where it is most effective, it can properly circulate the air in your attic and transform your home into a more comfortable living environment. It can suppress heat buildup and battle moisture. The best part is they cost nothing to operate.

Five Common Window Tint Myths

Five Common Window Tint Myths

Today, our dollars must go farther, that is a simple truth.  We are all looking for ways to get more out of what we spend while still preserving a lifestyle we have worked so hard achieve.  The purchases we make seem to have more meaning because we are all the more conscious of the work behind the dollars we spend.  The result is that today’s consumer is savvier than ever before.  We talk to family, we talk to neighbors, we research product websites, we read consumer studies, and armed with all this information we collect multiple bids.

Here at The Solar Guys, we like savvy customers because we are confident we have the highest quality products at competitive prices and we know people who do their homework always score the best!  Still, all that research can lead to “paralysis by analysis”, leaving us weary of the hunt, confused, and even questioning whether we still want anything at all.  We would like to take a couple lines to address some common myths about window film that we have encountered while visiting with our customers.

  1. “You can’t put Window Film on dual pane or Low E glass”False.  In fact, certain window films are made especially for Dual Pane or Low-E glass.  It is True that not all types of window film are compatible with all types of glass and installing a non-compatible film can cause thermal stress damage to the seals or glass.  Our consultants use a manufacturer’s glass compatibility chart to determine what’s safe; ask your consultant if you can view this if you are concerned about the safety of your glass.
  2. “Window Film doesn't help on Low-E glass”False.   Again, Low-E glass just changes the type of window film that is best for your application.  Having Low-E glass allows you to install lighter and clearer films which can nearly double the performance of Low-E glass without sacrificing the light you want to keep.  Adding window film also allows you to gain the U/V protection and Glare Reduction properties that only film can add.
  3. “Installing Window Film will void my window warranty”True…in part.  Due to the availability of inferior films in home centers and the aforementioned film to glass compatibility concerns, most glass manufacturers will void warranty on the glass if film is installed.  However, this is on the glass only, not the entire window.  Additionally, you should never lose your warranty; the party standing behind should simply transfer.  To make sure this happens, ask your window film consultant if their product warranty extends to the glass the film is applied to.
  4. “All Window Film is the same, just shop the lowest price”False.  Film constructions today range from the old faithful Dual Reflective technologies to Ceramic Nano Technologies to Spectrally Selective Low-E films that can make single pane glass equal to a modern Energy Star rated dual pane window.  Some window films are even used to strengthen glass where bomb blast or ballistics resistance ratings are required.   Choosing the right film for your application is all about deciding what is important to you, and then matching that with the strengths of a particular window film.  It’s about balancing price, heat, light, glare, U/V , privacy, security, and exterior aesthetics.  These concerns should not be taken lightly or assumed to be covered by a one size or one brand fits all mentality.
  5. “As long as it has a Lifetime Warranty it doesn't matter who you buy from”False.  First, not all Lifetime Warranties are the same; make sure it extends to the glass the film is applied to and make sure fading or discoloration from dye deterioration is covered over time.  Second, though warranties may be from the manufacturer they are issued through the installing vendor; which makes any warranty is only as good as the company who installs it.  So wouldn't’ you agree that you should know something about the company you choose to hire?  Are the installers direct employees of the company?  If not, they may not covered by the insurances of the company you hire and you may open yourself to liability.  Additionally, if they are not direct employees, do you or the company you hired really know who will be in your home?  At The Solar Guys, we hire our installers.  As our direct employees they are covered under our corporate General Liability and Worker’s Compensation insurances.  You can also have the confidence that when we send our employees to your home we know who they are because they have all passed background checks and drug screening tests.

Solar Attic Fans Vs. Electric Attic Fans – More Hype With No Hope?

Solar Attic Fans Vs. Electric Attic Fans – More Hype With No Hope?

Much of what is labeled “product advancement” nowadays should fall into the category of “one step forward, two steps back.”  One need only remember the “New Coke” debacle that hit the soft drink giant between the eyes a few years ago to see a case in point.  So when a “new, improved” product is touted as a better solution that what you are familiar with, a small dose of cynicism and suspicion is natural, even healthy in some cases.  Once in a while, though, technology does make a giant leap that gives us a better choice on all fronts, hands down.  The solar attic fan vs. electric fan is one of just such occasions.

Most of us are well aware that a hot, moist attic is not good for our home.  Higher A/C bills, a shorter roof shingle life, plywood roof decking damage, and mold and mildew issues can often be traced back to a poorly ventilated attic space.  Up until a few decades ago, the only option to help to address these problems was installing an electric attic ventilation fan.  On the plus side, these fans would do a great job of quickly lowering the temperature and humidity in the attic, while they were running.  Unfortunately, the heavy electric load of these units cut into any savings you were accruing through use.  So to keep the operating cost down, most homeowners would install a thermostat cutoff to limit the fan’s operating window.  While this did help to keep running costs down, it also created a cycle of “heat rises, fan turns on – heat lowers, and fan turns off.”  This constant fluctuation of temperature did not give homeowners the best protection possible since it allowed the attic to get too hot and then this adverse condition would finally turn the fan on, but at that point some damage had already been done.  Also, the major electric drain and motor wear came from turning the fan on from a stationary position, so the on/off method, while providing limited benefits, created problems of its own in the way of costly repairs and maintenance.

Enter the age of the Solar Attic Fan!  Some savant in a think tank finally realized that a while the sun is the culprit behind most of the attic issues we all have, it is also the best solution!  Solar attic ventilation fans allow you the satisfaction of turning the sun against itself! Anybody up for a cup of delicious irony?  Say goodbye to operating costs, because the sun is free!  Forget about a limited operating window allowing for accumulated damage, since the fans run as long as the sun is out.  What about the wear and tear on the fan motor running all day long, you ask?  Well, this is a valid concern, if we are only talking about traditional motor design.  Fortunately, another technological breakthrough in recent years that can be found in high-quality solar fans is the “brushless” or inductive motor.  Since these motors do not have brushes that wear out and have to be replaced, they can easily handle a much greater length of operating time as compared to traditional motors with no fear of burning up your investment.  By the way, did I mention that brushless motors are whisper quiet?  So unless you are living directly above a seismic fault line or have inner ear issues, distracting vibration or humming should be a thing of the past!

So if you are looking for a healthier, cooler, and dryer home, consider the benefits of solar attic ventilation.  I know that you have been burned in the past by empty promises of better things to come (it is an election year after all) but check your suspicion and cynicism at the door!  Solar fans are the wave of the future, and if they are any indication of where the solar industry is headed, I would say that it certainly looks brighter to me.

How do I choose the right company?

The Solar Guys - Monday, August 13, 2012

For the average homeowner, weeding through the yellow pages or internet to find the right contractor is about as pleasant as going to the dentist to have them drill for oil in your mouth.  Finding a genuinely qualified contractor that puts customer satisfaction first may seem like a fairytale in today’s society. Where do you start?  What’s the most important factor to consider?  Is it price, reliability, credibility, references, longevity, or a confusing conglomeration of all of these?  Even though there are many different web-based companies that offer to help you choose a “qualified” contractor, is this really an unbiased third party, or do they have their own agenda in mind?

If you feel that this situation well describes your feelings when home improvement time rolls around, you are not alone!  Many people today dread hiring a contractor because they have heard so many horror stories, but feel at a loss to know how to avoid repeating someone else’s mistake.  Don’t despair!  With a few pointed questions either delivered in person or even over the phone, you can fairly easily weed out the “fly-by-night” do-it-yourselfers that offer only a tail light guarantee (“I guarantee my work for as long as my tail lights are visible!”) and find yourself in the hands of a reputable, experienced, qualified contractor that will treat your home as if it is his or her own.

Here are a few questions that will help you:

1.  “Are you a State licensed General Contractor?” -  Most professional trades have a certain amount of overlap of skills, abilities, and procedures to some extent, and a General Contractor is required to have a comprehensive knowledge base that will cover a variety of situations.  State General Contractor licensure requires periodic retraining and retesting, so you can be confident that a currently licensed GC is aware of and is practicing up-to-date trade building procedures and ethics.

2.  “Do you use sub-contractors, or employees?” – This is a VERY important question to ask!  A contractor that uses subs is leaving you open to the age old question: “Who is ultimately responsible if and when I have a problem?”  When issues or concerns arise, you do not want to discover a cluster of finger pointing blame-gamers with no responsible person in sight.  A contractor that uses hired employees is taking all the responsibility upon themselves to make sure that in the end you are happy with your work.

3.  “Do you carry Workers’ Compensation coverage, or exemption?” – Again, this point cannot be overstated.  By nature of the word, EXEMPTION, limits the contractor’s liability in case of injury or accident, and can actually leave YOU open for liability if someone carries on unsafe practices on your property.  A contractor with full Workers’ Compensation coverage is demonstrating that they already value you enough as a potential customer to protect your person and property.

4.  “Do you perform background checks and drug test your employees?  Can you prove it?” – I won’t insult your intelligence by explaining why this is important.  Statistically, most robberies are committed by someone who has already been in your home.  A responsible, reputable contractor will pay the money up front to protect you and your family from potential danger because that is what you deserve, and because employees are the reflection and responsibility of the contractor that hires them.

5.  “Why should I choose you over someone else?” – A good contractor is not necessarily the cheapest one, especially when you consider all the things listed above that they should have done long before you call them.  While price is a factor, Benjamin Franklin said it best when he observed that “the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”  After all, what is more important to you?  Saving a few bucks for a single purchase and then experiencing years of frustration and regret, or having the deep satisfaction of knowing that you got exactly what you paid for? Rather than focusing on dollar amounts exclusively, ask the contractor to explain what they offer you in the way of products, service, and options, and then shop around to see if other companies can offer you the same for a lower cost.  And remember, don’t just take a salesperson’s word for it.  Is their product the best?  Prove it in writing!  Is their company the best?  Again, prove it!  What documentation can they provide that supports their claim?  Making sure that a company is putting their money where their mouth is will help you to get your money’s worth, instead of ending up with a shopping cart full of the latest snake oil available.

So in review, weeding through the haystack of businesses and finding the golden needle is not impossible and can even be enjoyable once you are armed with the right tools.  By asking the right questions and making sure that you are given, not empty sales pitches, but genuine proof, you can find your match made in contractor heaven...and happily ever after may not be as far off as never-never land after all!

HOA & ARC approval on Florida solar products is a federal right!

The Solar Guys - Tuesday, May 29, 2012

HOA & ARC approval on Florida solar products is a federal right!

We live in a country that guarantees us certain “inalienable” rights, and all of us appreciate the legal struggles that have helped to secure these for us.  Were you aware, though, that the state of Florida has fought and won for you the right to enjoy the sun?  That’s right!  You have “Solar Rights!”, and Florida says that these rights cannot be trampled on willy-nilly by any HOA or Architectural Review Committee that comes along.  For those of us that live in communities with  extensive exterior modification restrictions, or even Condominium communities where we traditionally had no say as to what goes on the roof, this is GREAT NEWS!  Even the strictest Community Board cannot supersede your State authorized right to take advantage of solar products, such as solar tubes, solar attic fans, and solar-rejecting window films that are environmentally friendly, extremely cost effective, and completely free to use once installed!

To make this easier to digest, here is a breakdown of three of your primary solar rights:

1.  You have the right to have LIGHT!

Tubular solar skylights have the ability to bring in tremendous quantities of light with a minimal roof penetration, all without significant heat gain, harmful UV intrusion, or leaks.  Without a doubt one of the best of these types of products is made by Solatube International, mainly due to the fact that this technology is their invention and they continue to hold the patents on it.  While communities certainly have the right (and knowing some people’s taste, the need!) to control the aesthetics of the exterior of homes in their vicinity, this cannot be leveraged to deny a homeowner the right to install efficient and safe solar lighting.  An HOA can legally require it’s residents to apply for approval first or go through some other type of approval process, but the end result has to be that the homeowner is authorized to have what they want.  That is their State-given right.

2.  You have the right to NOT have heat and moisture trapped in your home!

Most homes in Florida don’t have adequate passive attic venting, and because of this condition our attics trap a lot of heat and moisture.  This aggressive condition can raise the temperature of your air-conditioned space, while at the same time reduce the R-value of your insulation over time.  As you can guess, this is NOT a winning combination.  Now the State says that you can do something about it!  Solar attic fans can be implemented to fight back on both the heat and moisture fronts, and the beauty of it is that you are using the SUN against ITSELF because these fans are “run by the sun.”  Talk about having your cake and eating it too!  Use free energy to put money back in your pocket!  Again, since the state is promoting “green industries” your solar rights guarantee that this type of product is available for you, no matter where you live.

A word of caution here though.  Don’t get just any fan.  Look for one with Florida product approval (meaning state engineers have already approved the fan for high wind areas, like ours) and it wouldn’t hurt to have brushless motor technology as well.  This will guarantee whisper-quiet performance with a much longer lifespan than traditional motors.

And while we’re talking about heat, don’t forget to take a second look at your windows.  Window heat intrusion is the primary source of A/C operating cost, so make sure that you consider the best option to upgrade the energy efficiency of your existing windows.  One option is window replacement, but usually this can be cost and labor prohibitive because of the need for  costly demolition, clean-up, expensive replacement materials, permitting, and the list goes on and on.  Honestly, there is a much less expensive and labor intensive option that can give you comparable results, and that is to upgrade the performance of your existing windows using high performance window films.  Window film technology has come a long way, and is now able to act as a “smart film” that filters out unwanted heat, glare, and UV, while letting in the natural light that you want to keep.  In this case too, however, there is a need to do your homework since not all window film products are created equal.  Even many recognizable name brands carry films that have inherent aesthetic and composition liabilities due to the materials used.  In this case, having to go through your HOA or Architectural Review Board for approval may actually be to your benefit, since most communities have (or at least should have) limitations on the type of window film allowed in order to steer you away from window tints that contain dyes or metals (nobody wants purple windows or shiny “foil” windows in their neighborhood.)  In this case it helps to look for buzzwords like “dye or metal free,” or “100% nano-ceramic” to make sure that you are getting the best of what the state says you deserve.

3.  You have the right to a clothesline!

Ok, I admit this is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but believe it or not by state definition a clothesline is a “solar collector,” and as such you cannot be denied the right to have one.  Even though you’re probably thinking that calling a clothesline a “solar collector” is like calling a dish drying rack a “pneumatic food display dehumidifier”, it’s good to know that it’s there when you need it.  Personally, I’m a bit swayed by the fact that the sun and wind can’t make my clothes Downy soft, but that’s just my opinion!

We are used to lots of sun here in Florida.  After all, that’s what brought most of us down here in the first place.  Isn’t it great that now Florida legislation is helping you to put all that sunshine to good use?  Whether it’s keeping you hot with solar hot water or pool heating,  keeping you cool using solar fans and window film, or just shedding a little light on the matter using solar tubes, the sun is now your new best friend.  So go ahead!  Introduce him to your neighborhood community review board.  They may not like your new choice of companions, but after a bit of education and a lot of arm twisting, they won’t be able to help but admit that in the end, you were RIGHT!
